To Die and Live Again
Leonila, an 86-year-old widow, has spent her entire life in San Gregorio Atlapulco, a small town in the south of Mexico City.
Every year on the Day of the Dead, she prepares an ofrenda for her husband and her loved ones.
That night, she visits the cemetery to light her husband’s grave — unaware that she will receive a peculiar visit.
I shot this short film at the end of October 2017, shortly after the September earthquake that deeply shook Mexico City and left the city in a state of constant tension.
The protagonist is my father’s aunt. Although the film is fiction, everything was improvised and unscripted. The project was conceived and filmed as a 100% cinéma vérité piece.
